Derby winner traces back to a long line of the stable’s horses.
Goldrush Guru, this year's Victoria Derby winner, is not the first member of the family that has stepped out during Melbourne Cup Week.
His mother Glam Guru (Medaglia d'Oro) ran second in the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) on Derby Day 2017, while a couple of older members of the family ran in the Derby itself.
Glam Guru is out of the Fusaichi Pegasus mare Glory Guru, whose dam Proud Halo is also the mother of Gold Guru (Geiger Counter) and Gallant Guru (Montjeu), both of whom were trained by now-retired Leon Macdonald, former trainer partner of Goldrush Guru's trainer Andrew Gluyas.
The latter ran second-last in the 2005 Derby, eight years after Gold Guru ran fifth behind Second Coming.
Gold Guru returned in the second half of his three-year-old season to win the Group 1 ATC Derby (2400m).
The two starts before that he took on the champion Might And Power, defeating him in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) before a second placing in the Group 1 Tancred Stakes (2400m), while he also won the Group 1 Australian Guineas when it was a 2000m event.
So, even though he is a Victoria Derby winner, Goldrush Guru has a bit to do to be the family's highest achiever, but Gluyas will be buoyed by the fact he is by the same sire as last year's winner Riff Rocket, who went on to win the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and ATC Derby.
Goldrush Guru is a member of the fourth crop of Australian foals for US Triple Crown winner American Pharoah.
His fifth season at Coolmore Australian was his last in the Southern Hemisphere and he has just a handful of chances at a third-straight Victoria Derby win.
He served just 26 mares in 2021, producing 14 live foals, eight of which were colts, two of whom have since died, while another has already been exported to Korea.
