Breeding Stock Sale shows large gains

Four days of selling conclude in Deauville on Monday 


When the curtain came down on the fourth day of selling at the Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale, 740 of the 926 lots offered sold for €56,800,500. This figure was up almost 40 per cent from €41,541,000 last year and exceeded €50 million for the first time in the sale's history. The average rose 27 per cent to €76,757 from €60,379 a year ago while the median finished at €17,250, up from €15,000 last year. 

Eric Hoyeau, President of Arqana and Freddy Powell, Executive Director said: "The sales season is coming to a close on an excellent note after four incredible days. 

"We would like to express our sincere thanks to all the vendors who have entrusted us with mares, fillies and foals of exceptional quality. Deauville was particularly cosmopolitan, welcoming buyers from all over Europe but also from the United States, Australia, Japan, India and Turkey, the result of the prospecting work of our Bloodstock team and our representatives abroad. 

"A big congratulations also to the stud staff and to the teams in the yards, who gave their best despite the cold and the intense days, throughout this great marathon that is the Breeding Sale. 

"These record results are the result of a real team effort, both among our sales staff and in our offices. We will now focus on the last sale of the year, which will take place online next Thursday, and we wish everyone a happy holiday season." 

Monceaux finished at the head of the leading vendors table having sold 30 lots for €9,959,000, at an average of €331,967 including the sale topper Malavath (Mehmas). BBA Ireland meanwhile was the leading buyer having spent €9,211,000 on 46 horses at na verge of €200,239. 

Seven lots sold for €1 million or more and two lots made over €2 million. 

The fourth and final day on Tuesday was topped by an unraced daughter of Frankel (Galileo) who sold to BBA Ireland for €52,000 from Haras d'Ombreville. The three-year-old filly, named Save the World, is out of the stakes placed Invincible Spirit (Green Desert) mare Jellicle Ball and was originally bought at the 2020 Arqana Deauville September Yearling Sale for €140,000.
