Precious Gem’s first stakes victory at Caulfield last Saturday was cause for her co-breeders Lauriston Park Stud and Millford Thoroughbreds to celebrate on several fronts.

"She has been a terrific mare who has always promised to win at stakes level," Lauriston Park's Chris Bakker said, noting that the daughter of Econsul had recorded three black type placings before her victory in the Listed Anniversary Vase.

Bakker and Millford Thoroughbreds breed from Precious Gem's dam Gem Of Gems, an unraced daughter of Peintre Celebre, and have been delighted with the results.

"She is a lovely mare producing great types and all four of her runners to date have been winners,” Bakker said.

Served last spring by Toronado, Gem Of Gems is also the dam of the classy G2 placed Singapore galloper Happy Money.

Bakker is deservedly excited about the prospects of her Turffontein yearling colt and her Written Tycoon weanling filly.

"The Turffontein will be trained by David Hayes and Tom Dabernig and her filly by Written Tycoon is a cracker. It has been a great ride as a breeder," he said.

Precious Gem has won seven of her 34 starts, five of those at metropolitan level.

She was broken in at Lauriston Park, home to proven stallion Desert King and exciting newcomer Rock Hero, a stakes winning son of Fastnet Rock.
