Mare boosts NZ Cup prospects

She’s Insatiable staked her claim for a bigger staying prize when she upset the favoured contenders in the feature distance test at Riccarton on Saturday.

The six-year-old was a gallant winner of the Listed Gold Club Metropolitan Trophy in a perfect dress rehearsal for the upcoming Gr.3 Christchurch Casino New Zealand Cup.

Although she started at 18-1, She’s Insatiable was coming off a previous fourth behind Wolfwhistle in the Listed Spring Classic for part-owner and trainer Terrill Charles.

“She does an amazing job with the horses and deserves every success,” successful rider Jillian Morris said. “I’m looking forward to the cup in seven days’ time.”

She's Insatiable settled midfield on the fence and gamely chased Deliciano down in the straight for the fifth win of her career.

A daughter of Ustinov, the six-year-old has a pedigree to suggest she can get the cup trip. She is out of the Pentire mare Checkered Past, who won six races, and is from the family of the dual Group One VRC and Australian Derby winner Mahogany.

The genuine Deliciano was given a perfect ride by Darryl Bradley and she did her cup prospects no harm while Mungo Jerry ran on well for third, albeit a distant one.

There’s no doubt about his ability to run 3200 metres – he was fourth two years ago – but the cup hopes of O’Ceirins Secret, who was strongly supported in the pre-post market, took a hit.

A top three placing would have guaranteed him a start next Saturday and his prospects of making the field are now slim.
