Bary pleased with Group One hope

John Bary has gone as close as anyone to a Triple Crown clean sweep and he’s happy with the progress being made by his latest contender.

The Hastings trainer went closest to the Group One hat-trick in 2011 when the outstanding Jimmy Choux won the closing two legs after finishing runner-up to Mufhasa on the opening day of the carnival.

Bary believes his current charge Bohemian Lily is most likely to be best-suited to the last two races in the series, the Windsor Park Plate and the Livamol Classic, rather than the shorter Makfi Challenge Stakes.

“They’ve all got to kick off somewhere, but on her record the second and third days would be her main targets,” he said.

Raced by Kevin Hickman, Bohemian Lily began her career with Lance Noble before she claimed the Gr.2 The Roses and the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet from Gai Waterhouse’s Sydney yard.

She was also Group Two placed last spring up to 2500 metres in the Herbert Power and the Moonee Valley Gold Cup.

“She’s coming up super and had a jump-out the other day,” Bary said.

Bohemian Lily will trial at Taupo on Friday, if the proposed black type heats go ahead there, or at Foxton next week.

“She’s a lovely mare to do anything with and she’s had an uninterrupted preparation on good tracks.”

Bary has enjoyed a grand association with Johnathan Riddell, who has been booked to ride Bohemian Lily in the Makfi on August 27.

“We’ve gone to war together a lot of times and come out on top a lot of times as well – I’m very happy to have him on,” Bary said.
