Only the third horse in the race's history to claim successive wins in the Yorkshire Cup, the victory marked a return to form for Giavellotto. The team chose to swerve Royal Ascot after Yorkshire Cup glory last season, but he failed to win again, finishing third in the Group 2 Lonsdale Cup at the back end of the campaign.

The chestnut was well-beaten behind re-opposing rival Tower Of London in the Group 2 Dubai Gold Cup in March but the result never looked in doubt at the two furlong marker, with jockey Oisin Murphy taking a long look behind before taking up the lead. He pulled clear to finish comfortably ahead of the second-placed Vauban with John and Thady Gosden's Gregory back in third.

In an interview with ITV Racing, jockey Oisin Murphy said: "I knew that Ryan Moore was taking his time on Tower Of London and I was concerned that if I hit the front too early, I would give Ryan something to aim at.

"Marco Botti is having a terrific season, he's trained great horses in the past like Excelebration and his handling of this horse has been amazing. This is Andrea Atzeni's ride – he's having a brilliant time in Hong Kong so he couldn't be here, but he's been incredibly helpful with advice about how to ride him."
