Where it was warm and sunny for Cheltenham, the weather is not cooperating for the Grand National meet as it has been raining and chilly.
However there should be some spirited racing to warm the patron's hearts if not bodies. And the program starts of with a star turn in Big Bucks going for win #17 in the opening event. the Liverpool Hurdle. He's at a ridiculous price so just enjoy the run - his main rivals are Smad Place at 11/2, Poungach and Tidal Bay on 16/1 and the prices indicate how much they would have to improve to beat the champ.
The 4yo Juvenile Hurdle Gr 1 is a more competitive affair with several of the runners having fought out the Triumph Hurdle. That was won by Countrywide Flame although he's 4/1 as they seem to think that Grumeti, third in that race, can reverse the form. Dodging Bullets, who was fourth and Pearl Swan who fell, are on 9/2.
The Betfred Bowl Chase Gr 1 has 11 runners with Riverside Theatre going up in trip at 3/1. He may find this tough after the rain. Burton Port is 7/2, Medermit 5/1, and if you want a couple of roughies last year's winner Nacarat is 10/1 and we have a soft spot for Roberto Goldback at 33/1.
The Betfred Manifesto Gr 1 is a Novices' Chase with 5 runners. All Ferof is no value at 11/10 as he didn't jump that well last time out so we'll go for the lady in the race Pepite Rose who has won her last four outings.
