Brown crashes as Stanaway claims GC500 provisional pole

3 minute read

Richie Stanaway has blitzed the Supercars field to be fastest in qualifying, but a crash to championship leader Will Brown stole the show on the Gold Coast.

A crash to Supercars championship leader Will Brown has overshadowed Richie Stanaway's drive to secure provisional pole on the Gold Coast.

Stanaway went the quickest in the dying minutes of Saturday's qualifying session ahead of the top-10 shootout before Brown spun into the wall at turn 11 of the Surfers Paradise street circuit.

Brown, with the front-left of his Chevrolet Camaro into the concrete barrier, then suffered more car damage when Nick Percat and Tim Slade collided side-on.

The Red Bull driver will start Race 21 in 11th after losing his spot in the shootout for bringing out the red flag.

Brown makes way for reigning series champion Brodie Kostecki, in what could be a blow to his championship aspirations.

"I've been locking rears in there for the last two sessions and just thought I'd get a turn but didn't. I just locked the rears and slapped the fence," Brown said.

"Unfortunately, I took a couple of other cars out of their quali, which is, yeah, sorry to them.

"These things happen. It's Gold Coast. We'll just press on and see where we end up."

Grove Racing driver Stanaway clocked a lap time of one minute, 10.444 seconds to ensure he will be the last driver to have a qualifying attempt.

Championship contender Chaz Mostert found his pace to be second to Stanaway after struggling during Friday's practice with an engine issue.

The Walkinshaw Andretti United team discovered Mostert's Ford had suffered a component failure.

Tickford duo Cam Waters and Thomas Randle were third and fourth fastest after dominating practice, with Red Bull star Broc Feeney rounding out the top five.

The top-10 shootout gets underway at 1.40pm (AEDT), pushed back after an earlier delay, before Race 21 starts at 4.15pm.
