When it comes to an eye for racehorses Daniel Guy is proving a chip off the old block.
Daniel is the stable foreman for his father Brian Guy at the Gold Coast and a part-owner of Lassila who lines up in the Murwillumbah Truck Centre Christmas Cup (1530m) at Murwillumbah on Friday.
Daniel races the five-year-old Magic Albert mare with his sister Katie and her husband Barry Bowditch.
The mare was originally owned by Kate Nivison.
“Kate sent her up to me and when she decided not to breed with the mare she put her through the sales,” Bryan Guy explained.
“Daniel didn’t have a horse at the time and decided to buy her. They got her for $15,000.
“She’s won three for him including one at Eagle Farm since the purchase and more than paid her way.
“Daniel’s proven a pretty good judge.”
Lassila has an overall record of five wins and eight placing’s from 26 starts.
A free running mare, Lassila scored impressively over 1300m at Ballina two starts back on November 11 and was a last start four lengths sixth to Miss Leibert over 1400m at the Gold Coast on November 23.
She boasts a 1400m Eagle Farm win on October 2 amongst her wins.
“Her Ballina win was very good,” Guy said. “Last start at the Coast the leader went mad in front and it wasn’t such a bad run.
“She’s done very well since. She’s 100 per cent and we’re really happy with her.
“She’s not a big robust mare, more lightly framed, and she is the sort of horse that likes to roll along. She’s got a high cruising speed.
“Hopefully she can lead and dictate tomorrow.”
The 1530m represents new territory for Lassila who has won up to 1400m.
“We tried her at a mile (1600m) one day in town and she didn’t get it but we tried to hold her up and she’s a better horse allowed to run along,” Guy added.
Guy’s apprentice Janette Johnson has the mount.
