The Melbourne Mail - January 30

Flemington appeals as a punters meeting on Saturday with several interesting horses lining up with prospects of going on to better things this season.

Magna Rossa is over the odds with TopBetta Picture: Racing and Sports

One of them is Onerous who steps out in race two on the back of a return win at Sandown that suggested he might be ready to put it together this campaign.

He's always been a horse with plenty of promise and a peak rating first up from a break - where he ran the best figures for the day at Sandown - hints towards him working his way into better races this campaign.

One key might be coming here with 31 days between runs. His four wins to this point have come on debut, then off 131 days, 27 days and 91 days.

He certainly looks well placed today where on the back of that last start rating we have him marked a $2.20 chance.

TopBetta are currently betting a couple of rolls better than that at $2.60 - Click here for TopBetta's Flemington markets

That looks a fair gamble in a race lacking great depth. The danger is Zupacharged who comes off three fantastic efforts at the peak of his game but he's vulnerable to an improving Onerous and it's hard to make a case for him improving on the level he has established over that trio of runs.

For an each way play we look to race five, a competitive race for three-year-old fillies with a handful that look capable of progressing into better races.

They include early favourites Heatherly and Love Days (with preference there for the former) but at a bigger quote Magna Rossa looks to represent a bit of each way value.

She won a similar race down the straight course two starts back, returning good overall time and comfortably accounting for a couple of nice fillies.

Of the eight to have come out of that race, five have placed and several have posted smart performances in doing so.

Magna Rossa had to settle for third backing up at Caulfield but she was checked early and eventually outgunned by a promising colt in Golden Spin again in strong overall clock.

Doubt things are any tougher for her today and there is no reason why she won't be around the mark again. The 9.5 available at TopBetta looks over the odds and a worthwhile each way play.
