3 minute read

A pair of runners at Randwick on Saturday look set to build upon solid first up showings.

Early in the program, Wonderbolt appears pitchforked into the TAB Highway Plate (1100m).

The gelding resumed off a generous spell with a solid fifth in a Benchmark 77 Handicap (1100m) over the Scone Carnival.

It was an encouraging result and one which he is expected to improve on at Randwick on Saturday in the TAB Highway Plate (1100m).

The son of More Than Ready appears well placed under the Set Weights conditions of the Highway Plate.

With an official Benchmark Handicap of 77, Wonderbolt after the 2kg claim of apprentice Koby Jennings meets his opposition on substantially better weight terms than would be the case if Saturday Highway Plate were conducted under handicap conditions.

Star Shaft ran second in that race at Scone a fortnight ago, beating Wonderbolt by two lengths.

Wonderbolt now enjoys a 4.5kg weight turnaround on Star Shaft.

While Star Shaft was resuming off a 98 day break, Wonderbolt was commencing off a 266 day break and would have been in greater need of the outing.

Purchased by the Joseph and Jones stable as a tried horse in May 2015, Wonderbolt proved to be an astute purchase by the stable with respectable showings behind the likes of Brook Road, Two Blue, Darciwood and most impressively, Fell Swoop.

Such metropolitan form brought back to a country restricted event reads particularly well.

Later in the program, Disgraceful appeals at genuine each way odds in the One Solutions Benchmark 78 Handicap (1400m).

The Chris Waller-trained gelding produced an excellent first up showing when settling back and working home well into second over 1200m at Rosehill three weeks ago.

He edged out Caped Crusader for second on that occasion who he again faces here in what shapes as a competitive event to close out the program.

Caped Crusader and Roguish are presently vying for favouritism with the latter boasting that honour as of Friday lunchtime.

Roguish is clearly a talent however must be a query taking on the older horses at the fourth start of his maiden preparation.

Disgraceful will strip fitter second up and is yet to run out of the money in five prior visits to this course which includes a success here last preparation over 1200m.

He has missed out on the money just once in seven attempts at the trip so a rise to 1400m second run from a spell should be beneficial.

The John Singleton-owned gelding should settle back off what is likely to be a solid early tempo and be working into calculations at the business end of proceedings.
