The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained mare was held up badly in the straight and only got clear approaching the 100m.
By then Pioneering had unleashed her run out wide while Thud was only beginning to build her momentum.
Even still the mare fell only marginally short of victory.
Third up, Thud rises in distance to contest the Pluck @ Vinery Fillies and Mares Benchmark 85 Handicap (1350m).
While Thud is yet to possess a win for her efforts this campaign, the daughter of Snitzel has run career best figures in each of her starts.
The latest sees her rating highly amongst this field.
She will be fitter for her two runs this campaign and is drawn to receive all of the favours in transit from barrier 1.
The obvious fear after her latest outing is getting snookered on the fence once again.
The mare is due a change in fortunes though and it should be a case of third time lucky.
Today could also be the day for Thurston who will relish getting out to the 2000m of the Schweppes Benchmark 73 Handicap.

The race looks weak on paper outside of the first few in betting, one of these being Thurston.
Esteban holds favouritism after a pair of dominant wins at the provincials and could take some catching however expect Thurston to be closing in on him strongly at the business end of proceedings.
