Canberra Racing Preview - Acton Poly – Friday 26 July 2024

3 minute read

A good betting program.

Jockey : JEFF PENZA has a handy book at Canberra. Picture: Steve Hart

Race 1 1900m CL1 SW

Competitive. FIREALARM (6) missed a whisker here 16 days ago stepping up to this distance range. Maps for the run of the race and will present at peak fitness. A senior hoop replaces the 4kg apprentice and he can go one better. BLIND DATE (5) was beaten by 2L in the same contest, and it was a tidy effort. He will be fitter again and has more to give. UNITED FRONT (2) deserved the big Maiden win at Albury over 2050m on a deep surface. He was heavily bet and has more to offer. Has his first try on a synthetic surface and that's the niggle. MADENYO (4) switched from a top Victorian stable and did about what was expected at Narrandera over 1400m. He's going to improve with that under the belt and his Victorian figures over this distance range are compelling. Keep safe.

Race 2 1206m BM50

PAPAVER MINER (2) flies on this surface and has won and placed his last two here at this level. Has a handy 2kg claim and will lead or box seat from the inside barrier. He's holding his form and is hard to go past. PENCILED (1) resumes and has switched from a Victorian yard. Jumps from a low gate and the 2kg claim is handy. Raced well in stronger grade early doors and the local has likely trained on the Acton. The betting will be key. ROC THE WOLF (8) has been within range at his last two and will position forward. Rates a chance. DON'T THINKABOUTIT (3) won here this grade over a shorter sprint. The 3kg claim brings him into it but the barrier is awkward.

Race 3 1080m MDN SW

WEEPING WOMAN (6) resumes for a top Sydney stable with Penza a positive jockey booking. She's trialled sharply x2 at Warwick Farm and went well at Wyong before the break. Looks ready to go and will be naturally improved. CHAMP DE MARS (3) was on speed missing a whisker here 16 days ago and that's good form. Maps well and will be fitter again. He sets a decent standard for the newcomers. BUBBLE TEA (8) debuts for a Sydney yard and has looked good in 2x Warwick Farm trials. She's likely to run well. A DOUBLE DEGREE (7) resumes for the local Gardner yard and Cahill's booking creates plenty of interest. He has the rails gate and has trialled up on the track. One to keep safe.

Race 4 1280m MDN

O'HELLYEAH (6) placed at Albury on debut, and it was a good effort after a slow start. She was well supported and is sure to have come on. Maps for the run of the race and fitter can go one better. VELLA ICON (11) peaks and measure his chances on the lip defeat here two-back. Comes back to a shorter sprint but draws to advantage and will finish hard. COMB OVER CON (3) did a good job placing here at the last meeting. Beat the above home in that and maps well. Keeps Cahill and has decent claims. DRESSEL (1) switched from the Waller yard and needed the first-up outing. May need one more but has the ability and keep onside. DOLLYTHEDIVA (7) also deserves consideration.

Race 5 1750m BM65

BREAKING GROUND (3) switched from the Bruce barn in Queensland and needed the outing at Moruya on a heavy track. His Gold Coast synthetic form stacks right up and he was an easy all-the-way winner there two-back over 1540m. Good enough and the betting will be key. FINAL COMMENT (7) went close at Moruya over a mile as favourite finding more like his best. Peaks and the extra metres suit. He may push forward today and is close to a win. BURGUNDY GIRL (6) won the 58 at Wagga over a middle distance and then came back to the mile at Queanbeyan narrowly beaten. Maps well and has a handy 2kg claim. A chance to bounce. GO ELLIE GO (5) peaks and missed the hat trick by a whisker at Narrandera. Has to manage the step up in distance but she gets in well with the 4kg claim and can control the race from the rails gate.

Race 6 1280m CL2

HURRICANE ABLOWING (3) peaks off the CL1 win here and rates one of the better bets on the cards. Penza stays aboard and should find cover. He can take the next step. CHOP THE ICE (2) is back in grade and hasn't enjoyed the wet tracks his last two. He's won here and is right up to this at best. Will give away a start but will finish hard. TEXAS OPEN (9) has placed 2/3 at this track/distance and can go a lot better. He can use an inside barrier and is in light with the 3kg claim. Keep onside. MESMERISER (6) is lightly raced. Won on debut and didn't enjoy the heavy surface following. Fitter again and a senior hoop takes over from the 4kg apprentice.

Race 7 1206m Open – Federal

LOVE SHUCK (2) won the 75 here heavily bet and went close this trip prior. Owen goes aboard and will likely push forward. With average luck, he can go back-to-back. FANGELA (1) resumed in the same race beaten 1.4L. He has more to give and benefits from a 2kg claim. He's proven second-up and is a winning chance for the premier local barn. Stablemate LA SANTE (4) rates similarly and assess his chances on the lip defeat two back at Albury over a mile. Maps well and the shorter journey is likely to suit. STARLIV (11) races well here and was last seen 10 days ago beaten 1L on the Ballarat synthetic in a 64. Has weight relief and is also a hope. MISS OSTEND (6) has raced on town his last two on heavy tracks and has been freshened. Draws wide but no surprise if she shows more.
