Mt Bakewell members pony up at York Cup to raise funds for club equipment

Members from the Mt Bakewell Horse and Pony Club took a spell from riding to volunteer at the annual York Cup, raising funds for much-needed club equipment.

Through raffles of various items donated by club members and local businesses and donation boxes, the Pony Club raised a total of $1625. Racing WA matched the funds raised on the day through its Race Club Community Program, bringing the total to $3250.

The money raised will go towards purchasing vital safety equipment for the Pony Club, ensuring members are well-prepared for equestrian competitions at local shows.

York Racing Inc Committee Member and Pony Club Head Coach Susan Britza said the program brought everyone together on race day.

"It was wonderful for our volunteers and children to participate, not only to support the Pony Club financially, but also to engage with another aspect of the equestrian industry," Susan said.

"As a small club, raising extra funds can be challenging, so this event gave our members a fun experience while providing a much-needed financial injection to the Pony Club."

With 44 of WA's 47 race clubs based in remote and regional communities, Racing and Wagering Western Australia CEO Ian Edwards said the positive effects of the fundraising program have been extensive for community groups and not-for-profits.

"Race clubs play an important role in their communities – both economically and socially – with partnerships like this a prime example of the strong connection race clubs have with their communities," Ian said.

"York Racing chose a worthy cause for their fundraising, and we are pleased to match their efforts.

"Racing WA is committed to making a positive contribution to our State. The Race Club Community Program allows clubs to guide our giving by proposing a local group or charity they believe deserves support and we match the funds raised on special race days."

Since the program's inception in 2015, race clubs and Racing WA have jointly raised more than $1 million for charitable organisations.
