Midweek racing from Sandown Lakeside and Warwick Farm and we've got a horse to follow from each meeting.

Sandown Lakeside Race 1 - Kalkallo

A bit of a lacklustre meeting at Sandown on Wednesday with nothing really catching the eye, but debutant winner in the opener Kalkallo has the right profile to keep improving. Only four rivals to beat and he sat on a below average tempo but the Alabama Express gelding showed a sharp turn of foot to put a healthy margin on his rivals, not surprisingly running the fastest last 600m of the meeting. Will need to see him again at midweek benchmark 64 level or similar before suggesting he can measure up on a Saturday at this time of year but he's promising.

Warwick Farm Race 1 - Powers Of Opal

Really liked the return of this Ocean Park filly, who savaged the line over 1300m from a hopeless position, making up very good ground over the final furlong to grab fourth, beaten half a length. Trained by John Sargeant, she had two runs in her debut campaign, closing off well at this track and trip first time out before being thrown into the Fernhill Mile, racing wide without cover throughout but sticking on quite well for sixth to star two-year-old Broadsiding. I'd suggest, as if often the case with the stable, that she's on an Oaks path, and don't be surprised to see her bob up in Melbourne for one of those lead up races like the Oaks trial.
