The Saturday-class Doomben meeting on Wednesday provided a couple of blackbookers towards the Queensland Summer Carnival.
Doomben Race 6 – Skirt The Law
The past year has delivered a mixed bag of results by this Tony Gollan-trained mare but her second placing in fillies and mares benchmark 78 over 1110m suggested that Skirt The Law is getting back to her previous good level of form.
Notching a rating of 98, the daughter of Better Than Ready achieved her highest mark since her short spring campaign in Melbourne in 2023 where two triple figure ratings were posted in her placings at black type level.
The 2022 Magic Millions 2yo Classic (1200m) winner was outgunned here by Rockhampton visitor Cherry Rose who also showed herself to be up to Summer Carnival company. Skirt The Law carried seven-kilos more finising two-lengths behind the winner.
All of this suggests there more to come from both horses but especially Skirt The Law.
Doomben Race 8 – Appin Girl
This Matthew Hoysted-trained mare may have been beaten by a rejuvenated Abounding but now as a four-year-old, and approaching the summer feature races, her ratings climb this preparation is saying that another win is not far away.
105 is a good number for a promising type and her career peak so far which is a good sign coming out of this listed race over 1200m.
Rising from benchmark company to black type and delivering on ability, Appin Girl can improve again especially as the sprint features become more lucrative over the next two months. She's a Capitalist mare on the up.
