Race 6: Alpine Flyer

The Michael Hickmott-trained mare has returned in career best form this campaign and is one we want to follow. The Alpine Eagle six-year-old chased gamely into the placings when resuming at Flemington a fortnight ago in what was a solidly run affair. Returning with a rating of 94 on the Racing and Sports scale, Alpine Flyer matched his career peak of 96 when scoring arrogantly over the 1550m. Yet to be tested at a distance greater than the mile, her win on Saturday suggests she's ready to see the longer journey.

A notable mention also has to go to Lingani (race 8), who was able to back up her Lightning Stakes success, even after conceding 3kgs to firm favourite Aviatress. The Smart Missile mare posted a new peak of 102 on the R&S scale, thanks to a smart inside-running steer from Dom Tourneur. Suspecting the P & B Blanch team will have a lot more fun with this mare.
