The favourite Multilateral settled in sixth place, one off the rails, following a good tempo, set by tearaway leader Laidback Larry.

He was urged to improve by James McDonald at the 700m and he moved up (wide out) nearing the home turn to challenge on straightening.

He took the lead at the 100m and then fought back to win by a long neck in a solid staying performance.

Canny Ballad was back in seventh place on the rails, improved nicely between runners nearing the turn. He got to third at the 100m and kept running on for a good second.

Secessio was back in third place, was under riding from the 700m but kept running on and took a narrow lead coming to the home turn.

He then battled on for a sound third, beaten just under two lengths.

Tremec was a distant ninth on the rails to the 600m and made late ground, just missing third in a photo to finish (two lengths) fourth.

Disclaimer plugged along for (3.7 lengths) fifth while Destiny’s Kiss also only plugged on in the straight for sixth, beaten just over five lengths.

The second favourite Queenstown disappointed. He was a distant fourth at the 600m but was under pressure shortly afterwards before finishing (12 lengths) tenth.
