Phrases worked across to settle down in second position one off the fence. Self Sense made a move in the middle stages and Jason Collett elected to allow his mount to settle back in third, about five lengths from the tearaway leader Black Jag. He turned for home three wide and battled on gamely the whole way down the straight to grab Self Sense right on the post to score a narrow win.
Self Sense was trapped three wide second last from his wide barrier (8), forcing Tye Angland to take his mount around the field in the middle stages of the race to settle in second position at the 1000m. He took the field up to the tearaway leader and was left in front long way from home. He looked the certain winning inside the final 100m but tired a little late on to just miss. He put up a big performance and without having to make his mid race move he should have won.
Pajaro enjoyed a nice run in the race, fifth on the fence. He switched out two wide and took the home turn three wide in the clear on the outside of Phrases. He put his run in the with winner but only battled late on to grab third in a photo finish.
