Kawi wins 2015 Makfi Challenge Stakes Group 1 NZ$200,000 at Hastings (NZ), 1400m.
The favourite Kawi scored his first Group One win, deservedly after building a most consistent record, having now raced 16 times for seven wins and six placings. He settled about tenth from his wide barrier (12) following a strong pace, before improving (deep) from the 600m. He moved up strongly on straightening, hit the front at the 100m and then drew clear to score impressively.
Ryan Mark was quickly away but was caught deep outside a number of leaders before easing to race in fourth spot (but wide without cover). He moved up coming to the home turn, got to the front at the 200m and fought on gamely for a good second after working in the early part of the race.
Ginner Hart was ninth early on, improved from the 600m to challenge strongly at the 200. He then fought on well for a good third.
Addictive Habit showed good early pace and after attempting to lead, settled in fourth place. He was shuffled back a bit at the home turn and then worked home quite well for (3 lengths) fourth.
