Awesome Rock began well from his wide barrier (13) and soon worked across to settle outside the leader (Jacquinot Bay). They then travelled at a moderate pace (first 1200m 1:16.26) before picking up the tempo from the 600m. He got past the leader at the 200m and then held his advantage in the sprint home (last 600m 33.94) to win well.

Favourite Malice settled well in sixth place, between runners. He angled into clear running on turning for home, put in a run from the 300m and kept battling on well in the sprint home for a sound second.

Garud had a nice trip behind the leader from his good barrier (3), got through to second on passing the 200m and battled on in the sprint home to hold third.

Jacquinot Bay went to the front, slowed the pace and fought back in the straight for (2.2 lengths) fourth, after seeming to have every chance.
