Blueberry Hill wins 2016 Sky Gai Waterhouse Classic Listed $100,000 at Ipswich (QLD) Fillies & Mares, 1350m.
Three-year-old filly Blueberry Hill put up a smart effort in winning here. She was ridden quietly on this occasion from her wide barrier (10) and was in last place in the 13-horse field at the 600m. She then put in a strong, wide run going widest of all at the home turn and continued with a strong run to hit the front at the 50m prior to her narrow but impressive win.
Elusive Catch had a good trip in fifth place on the rails from her inside barrier (1) before getting through to challenge on turning for home. She challenged at the 100m and then fought very well for a good second.
Echo Gal raced outside the leader (Serenade), got to the front on straightening and then battled well to just hold the minor placing.
Scarlet Billows settled near last in the 13-horse field from her awkward barrier (11), improved (wide out) from the 600m and kept finishing well to just miss third in a photo to take a good fourth under her top weight (59kg).
The favourite Serenade showed her customary pace and led the field until the home turn before finishing (4.1 lengths) fifth, after seeming to have every chance.
