Godolphin-raced Oceanographer came firmly into Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) calculations after a strong staying effort to win here at his second Australian start. He was ridden patiently by Kerrin McEvoy and remained near the tail of the 12-horse field before commencing his move (wide with cover) rounding the home turn. He got to fifth at the 200m and then came with an impressive run to take a very good win nearing the post.

Tom Melbourne went to the front as usual, ran along at a good tempo and after being challenged at the home turn, grabbed a clear break at the 300m, looking the winner. He was only overhauled in the closing stages for a good second after running a bold race.

The winner’s stablemate Tally raced back in sixth place, one off the rails, tracked up nicely at the home turn, went to second at the 300m and then fought on well to take the minor placing.

De Little Engine raced back in ninth place, improved between runners on turning for home and ran on nicely, late for a good (3.7 lengths) fourth.

Black Tomahawk raced in second place most of the way and battled on for (7.5 lengths) fifth while Real Love was back in tenth place, got into clear running at the 300m and steadily ground without threatening for (8 lengths) sixth.
