Maternal wins 2017 Sky Gai Waterhouse Classic Listed $100,000 at Ipswich (QLD) Fillies & Mare, 1350m.
Godolphin-raced stablemates fought out the finish with the favourite Maternal scoring narrowly. She began well from her wide barrier (14) and settled in second place behind the leader (Slumber Party). She moved up approaching the home turn, got to the front at the 200m and then fought back gamely to score in a photo.
Kinshachi settled in sixth place, went through to fourth coming to the home turn before getting along the inner at the 100m to challenge. She then battled strongly for a second, putting up a good effort after conceding 4.5kg to the winner.
Banda Spice was back in tenth place until nearing the hometurn and caught the eye with her late closing third, while Slumber Party was smartly away and led the field until into the home straight before holding on for (2.7 lengths) fourth.
