Honest stayer Light Vision will target this year's Caulfield Cup following his back to back win in today's Bart Cummings Stakes at Flemington.
The Robert Smerdon-trained gelding was a narrow winner of the race last year with a lighter weight and this year had to pull out everything to win again, carrying 58.5kg.
Given a good run with cover by Nick Hall, Light Vision got into the clear and ground home in his usual style, holding off Miss Darcey with her light weight and Zacroona.
Light Vision was on the fringe of the Caulfield Cup field last year but Smerdon took the easier option and ran in the Geelong Cup.
But there he ended up bumping into Bauer, who just missed out in the Melbourne Cup at his following start.
This year Light Vision comes into the spring with almost identical form but with 52.5kg in the Caulfield Cup will get his chance in the race.
“We're going to go into the Caulfield Cup,” Smerdon said.
“I think he's going every bit as good, if not a bit better. He's holding that form.”
Light Vision is currently 28th in order of entry for the Caulfield Cup but could be elevated with a re-handicap by Racing Victoria Handicapper Greg Carpenter, although given the narrow margin today that is unlikely.
Smerdon said Luke Nolen would have the Caulfield Cup ride.
