Lucripetous has stormed home from the back of the field to take out the 3yo Australian Turf Club Plate (1600m) at Canterbury today in just his second career start.

The Chris Waller-trained runner was well beaten for early speed, with stablemate Hydropower setting a fast early tempo along with Miss Ready and Frankenfurter, with Lucripetous at one stage more than three lengths behind the second last horse.
Lucripetous, who was ridden by Sydney premiership leading jockey Hugh Bowman joined the field rounding the turn before running on strongly to win by almost 3L from One Rar in second and Hydropower in third.
“He is certainly a horse going places and he was a bit of a query stepping him up so quick but he looked like he needed it,” said Waller.
“The Rosehill Guineas and ATC Derby are a long way away but you have to give them the opportunity and we will take gradual steps and take the back door to the good races wether it be here or in Queensland,” he added.
“It was a very good ride by Hugh and he is an asset for any stable especially for our stable as a lot of our horses are ridden that way.”
Bowman who had ridden the horse in trials but not during his second placing on debut at Newcastle was worried with the step up in to the mile in just his second start but was very impressed with the way the horse finished off the race.
“It was a bit of a worry the way he was carrying on before the race, not that he was doing a lot wrong but he was just very fresh,” Bowman said.
“The times tell you how quick they were going but in saying that I didn't want to be three lengths off the second last horse either,” he added.
“I really wanted him to stay relaxed otherwise he would have not run the journey. But he did relax well off the good pace and finished off well and you couldn't ask more than that.”
The start of the race was delayed when Drinks All Round got stuck in the barrier and was subsequently spelled.
One Rar from the Craig Carmody yard ran well for yet again another placing and looks one to follow in the near future.
