Glen Boss continued his stellar staying spring to claim the Sandown Cup on Saturday, delivering Ibicenco a handy consolation prize for missing the Melbourne Cup.
The champion jockey was never troubled in the Listed $150,000 two-mile race, hitting the front 300m from home and comfortably holding out early pacesetter Reuben Percival.
Melbourne Cup runner Unusual Suspect bobbed out I'm Jake for third, but no one was ever going to trouble the impressive Luca Cumani-trained winner.
It added to Boss's impressive 2012 collection of feature spring races which already includes the Geelong and Bendigo Cups, and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
“I thought I was on the best two miler in the race,” Boss said.
“It was pretty painless and went to plan. They wanted me on the speed from the get go, first half mile was reasonably solid they all got their spots.
“Once we got to the crossing the tempo slowed which you would naturally expect.
“He cruised up that hill off the bridle. Once we got to the 1000m mark it was all over, once he got on the bridle it was pretty painless from that point onwards.
“He gave me an okay feel. Where he ends up I'm not sure but he gave me an okay feel.”
OTI Racing, who own the German import, confirmed after the race that Ibicenco would now be transferred to Peter Moody.
“He'll probably get the sack now Luca because the horse will go to Peter Moody,” director Terry Henderson said.
“We'll give him an easy time now and we'll probably get him ready for the Sydney Cup and get him ready for next year.”
That's the same pathway successfully pioneered by German compatriot Manighar.
