Lions into AFLW prelim as Tigers crash out

3 minute read

Brisbane booked a home preliminary final with victory over Hawthorn, who now face a semi-final against Port Adelaide.

A SNAPSHOT OF WEEK 10 OF THE AFLW SEASON

THEY SAID IT: "That actually infuriates me a little bit, and it's disrespectful to a lot of the teams we have played." - After their qualifying final loss to Brisbane, Hawthorn coach Daniel Webster wasn't happy at the suggestion a soft draw helped the Hawks reach the top four.

THE MOMENT: Essendon were leading early in the second quarter against Fremantle when star midfielder Madison Prespakis injured her hip while taking a mark. The Bombers were already without ruck Steph Wales and captain Bonnie Toogood, and the loss of Prespakis was a huge blow to their victory hopes. Fremantle went on to win.

TRIBUNAL WATCH: Brisbane's Belle Dawes may face a nervous wait for the match review officer's assessment of her front-on contact with Hawthorn's Ainslie Kemp. Dawes ran at Kemp, then attempted to pull out of a tackle but crashed straight into her. Kemp was assessed for concussion but cleared.

TALKING POINT: Brisbane and Hawthorn players scuffled in front of the interchange benches on the final siren. It is unsure what prompted the brief all-in, but Brisbane fans were seen yelling at former Lion and now Hawthorn captain Emily Bates.

STAT THAT MATTERS: Fremantle ruck Mim Strom's 56 hitouts against Essendon was a new AFLW record. She also tallied 11 clearances, 26 possessions, 441m gained and a goal in a mighty performance.

PLAYER OF THE ROUND: For a player in a losing team, Adelaide veteran Chelsea Randall turned in a superb effort. The AFLW great turned back the clock with two goals, 22 disposals and a wonderful run-down tackle against North Melbourne.

INJURIES: M Prespakis (Ess, hip), A Mulholland (Frem, back), A Clarke (Ess, head)

WHAT'S NEXT: North Melbourne and Brisbane have the week off. Hawthorn and Port Adelaide will play for the chance to face the Kangaroos in the preliminary final, while the Lions will await the victor of Adelaide's semi-final against Fremantle.
