Kevin Walters will publicly address his shock exit as Brisbane NRL coach after a review into the side's 2024 freefall triggered the club great's sacking.

The five-time Broncos premiership player won't return for a fifth campaign in charge, his contract cut short with two years remaining after their horror slide from 2023 grand finalists to a spluttering 12th.

It was the third year of four under Walters that the Broncos missed the finals.

Less than 12 months ago the Broncos led Penrith 24-8 in the grand final, only to fall 26-24.

An independent review into their fall from grace took place immediately after the season.

The club announced on Thursday that Walters had "stood down", the decision catching players including captain and influential halfback Adam Reynolds by surprise.

Walters, who will address media alongside Broncos chief executive Dave Donaghy on Friday morning, said in a statement the stint had taken a toll on him and his family.

Walters had recruited Ben Te'o and Trent Barrett as assistants for next season.

Josh Hannay, after missing out on the Parramatta job to Jason Ryles, has impressed in multiple interim NRL head coaching roles and as a Queensland State of Origin assistant.

NSW State of Origin coach Michael Maguire, a premiership winner with Reynolds and Te'o at Souths, is expected to be another leading contender.
