Wagga racecourse is the home of the historic Murrumbidgee Turf Club and is the major racing and training centre in the Riverina region in NSW. The Murrumbidgee Turf Club was formed in 1849 and staged the first Wagga Gold Cup in 1873. The Murrumbdigee Turf Club holds 24 meetings a year on its course proper or the inner Riverside track. The highlight of the racing year in Wagga Wagga is Wagga Gold Cup Carnival over two days in May. Wagga racecourse, 470km from Sydney, is situated close to the Wagga CBD and was rebuilt in 1993 with a new course proper and grandstand followed by the addition of the inner Riverside track in 2013.
Wagga racecourse is big triangular layout with a circumference of 2200 metres and a home straight of 420 metres. Features of the track include starting chutes for races over 1000m, 1400m and 1600m and long straight runs of between 400m and 600m from most starting points. More than 25 trainers are based at Wagga racecourse with over 120 horses in work at any one time. There are five different tracks with three used for training purposes, plus the B track and the course proper.
