A look at the results from the undercard at Flemington.
Aeliana presses Guineas claims
Chris Waller's embarrassment of riches with his three-year-olds fillies was on show in he Melbourne Cup Carnival's opening event with Aeliana dominated her rivals in the $500,000 Carbine Club Stakes.
The daughter of Castelvecchio provided Waller with a fourth win in the 1600-metre Group 3 – and first since Fangirl three years ago – when the $5.50 chance swept home from last to score a 3-1/2-length win over Another Prophet ($10) with $2.40 favourite Feroce back in third
Aeliana is probably number three on the list of Waller's three-year-old girls, behind the unbeaten Autumn Glow and Group 1 Flight Stakes winner Lady Shenandoah, but is now the $5 favourite for the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on November 16.
"Today she's beaten the boys, so she'll go back and face the girls," Waller said.
"It's a good process to try and get a horse up in the grade each time they race and he's made that right step today."
Aeliana, who was ridden to victory by James Mcdonald, is raced by Denise Martin's Star Thoroughbreds and Martin made a rare trip to New Zealand purchase her for NZ$180,000 with the filly out of a Temolie, who is a half-sister to Star's Group 1 winner Invincibella.
Guineas opportunity for Zeitung
Godolphin filly Zeitung is likely to be given the opportunity at Group 1 company after a powerful finishing burst saw her claim the Group 3 The Vanity (1400m).
Trainer James Cummings said victory The Vanity now makes Zeitung a valuable broodmare when her racing days are over, but a Group 1 win would look better on her page.
The rise to 1600m for the Thousand Guineas on November 16 is something Cummings will now contemplate with the daughter of Exceed And Excel.
"This win is great for her page, she's turned out hugely valuable and we can give consideration to the Thousand Guineas," Cummings said.
"The winner of the first (Aeliana) was pretty impressive, so there are lovely three-year-old fillies around, but I think Zeitung could be right in the mix there.
"There's a lot to be said for giving her an opportunity and testing her, because there's one thing about her, she's quite resolute and if we decided to go there because she pulled up well then I think she could acquit herself very well."
Maharba holds off Rey in Rising Fast
Grahame Begg has a decision to make with Maharba after the four-year-old returned to winning form in the Group 3 Rising Fast Stakes (1200m).
The Cranbourne horseman needs to decide whether he wants to give the four-year-old his shot at Group 1 glory in Perth's Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) or stick closer to home and try to become the inaugural winner of the $1 million The Meteorite on his hometrack.
The four-year-old, who started $18, rallied strongly when seemingly set to be gobbled up by $4.80 second elect Rey Magnerio to score a short-half-head win with Charm Stone ($12) turning in an encouraging run to finish a half-length back third.
"He's entered for Perth, the Winterbottom over there, and also they've got that slot race at Cranbourne (The Meteorite), which certainly is on the radar."
"We thought this was a race that would be very well suited to him, under the sort of conditions of the race.
"He came out and ran third, first up in a Group Two weight-for-age, and he wasn't really ready that day, he had a lot of improvement to come, but we feel he's come up very, very well."
The victory was Maharba's fourth from 13 starts and his third in Stakes grade after earlier Listed wins in the Talindert Stakes and Hareeba Stakes.
Isthmus bounces back in Furphy Sprint
Blueblood filly Isthmus celebrated victory on the day her star mother won a Group 1 when she took out the final event on the card, the Group 3 Furphy Sprint.
The Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained mare, a daughter of I Am Invincible, was a dominant 2-1/2-length winner in the 1100m event.
The four-year-old is out of the Fastnet Rock mare Shoals, a three-time winner at the highest level whose first Group 1 win came in the Empire Rose Stakes on Derby Day.
Sam Freedman said it was great to win with her on a big day and she could now target another race her mother win, the Group 1 Sangster Stakes in Adelaide
"Being a stakes winner now makes a big difference to her page and she's certainly a valuable mare," Freedman said.
"So she's capable of getting to the top level, we feel, and maybe it's a Sangster in the Autumn."
