Spanish Mission passed fit to accept for the Melbourne Cup.

Spanish Mission will be among the final field of 24 for the Melbourne Cup after passing a third veterinary examination. 

The second favourite for Tuesday's Melbourne Cup had failed a Racing Victoria vets examination on Thursday when Spanish Mission was displaying signs of lameness in the right foreleg. 

The swelling had gone down on Friday but there was still some heat in the area when inspected on Friday, prompting a trip to a Werribee veterinary clinic and a third examination on Saturday morning. 

A panel of three vets gave Spanish Mission the all-clear to be among final acceptances for the Melbourne Cup later Saturday afternoon. 

News that Spanish Mission had been given the nod to be an acceptor saw TAB shortened the Andrew Balding-trained stayer from $9 to $8 before the final field was announced. 

Incentivise held favouritism at $2.30. 

All runners in Tuesday Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington will undergo a final inspection on Monday.
