AFL: Top four on the line on super Saturday

3 minute read

Saturday looks set to be another pivotal day in the battle to make the top four, with five of the top six all in action.

The top sides in the AFL are struggling for consistency and it is making for an exciting battle with just two games of the regular season remaining.

There is a lot to be decided and Saturday looks like being a massive day.

Greater Western Sydney versus Fremantle is huge, while Brisbane travel to take on Collingwood and Geelong visit St Kilda.

Brisbane are 4.50 to win the 2024 grand final, with Sydney available at 4.33, but the race for the premiership is wide open.

Form has been an issue for some sides and they will be desperate to find it over the next couple of games.

In-form Giants walking tall

. What: Greater Western Sydney v Fremantle
. Where: ENGIE Stadium, Sydney
. When: 13:45 (AEST), Saturday 17th August
. How to watch: Kayo, Foxtel, Channel 7
. Odds: Greater Western Sydney 1.50, Fremantle 2.60

Greater Western Sydney are the form team in the AFL after winning the last six games on the bounce.

However, there can be no room for complacency against a Fremantle side that need at least one win from the last two games to secure a place in the eight.

The Dockers have lost the last two games by narrow margins, but on their most recent trip to Sydney, they shocked the Swans at the SCG.

They can be backed at 5.50 to pull off another big result and win by 1-12 points.

Brisbane in need of two wins

. What: Collingwood v Brisbane
. Where: MCG, Melbourne
. When: 16:35 (AEST), Saturday 17th August
. How to watch: Kayo, Foxtel
. Odds: Collingwood 2.35, Brisbane 1.60

It is another grand final rematch and the Lions need to win it to keep their top-four hopes alive.

The defeat to GWS last week was a hammer blow and they need to bounce back against a Pies side that are set to miss out on the eight.

Collingwood won the grand final by four points, the last time the two sides met at the MCG, but they have suffered a dramatic fall from grace since then.

Brisbane can be backed at 6.00 to win this one by 1-12 points.

Cats are starting to purr

. What: St Kilda v Geelong
. Where: Marvel Stadium, Melbourne
. When: 19:30 (AEST), Saturday 17th August
. How to watch: Kayo, Foxtel, Channel 7
. Odds: St Kilda 2.55, Geelong 1.52

Geelong picked up a massive win at Fremantle last week to move into the top four, and the aim now is to stay there.

They have won six out of their last seven games, and with the Saints and West Coast to come, they should secure the double chance.

It will not be easy however against a St Kilda side that have won three of their last four games, including two at Marvel Stadium.

Even so, Geelong are on fire and can be backed at 5.00 to win by 13-24 points.

Gold Coast look to build on away win

. What: Gold Coast v Melbourne
. Where: People First Stadium, Gold Coast
. When: 13:45 (AEST), Saturday 17th August
. How to watch: Kayo, Foxtel
. Odds: Gold Coast 1.40, Melbourne 3.00

The Gold Coast finally managed to pick up their first win on the road when stunning Essendon last weekend.

Now they are back on home soil, where they have lost just the one game this season, against arch rivals Brisbane.

Mac Andrew booted the after-the-siren winner against the Bombers last week, and now has seven goals in his last two games.

He can be backed at 10.00 to boot the first against the Demons.

Melbourne are on a dire run of form having lost their last four games on the bounce and need a lift to take them into 2025.
