Premier League: A closer look at opening month for Postecoglou’s Spurs

3 minute read

Preparations are well underway for the 2024/25 Premier League season as Ange Postecoglou prepares for his second campaign with Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs enjoyed a strong start to last season and will be hoping for the same again this time around but with more sustained success towards the business end of the year to go with it.

Here's a closer look at Tottenham's Premier League games in August as the north London outfit hope to set the pace again.

Trip to the Foxes' den first up

A trip north to newly-promoted Leicester City is first up for Postecoglou's side as they clash at the King Power Stadium in the early hours of Tuesday 20th August.

The Foxes finished top of the pile in the Championship last season but have had an unsettled summer with Enzo Maresca leaving the East Midlands outfit to join Tottenham's rivals Chelsea.

With former Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper taking charge and Leicester expected to be handed a points deduction at the start of the season for alleged breaches of financial fair play, it looks to be a good time to take on this Foxes side.

Games between these teams tend to be high-scoring affairs, as the 6-2 win for Tottenham in north London and the 4-1 win for Leicester at the King Power in the two Premier League games last season highlight.

In fact, in the last five encounters between these teams, there have been no less than 28 goals scored, at an average of 5.6 goals per game.

Another high-scoring match might well be on the cards in this opening game, with Spurs at 1.66 to win, 3.90 to draw and 5.00 to lose to the Foxes.

Tottenham entertain Toffees

Spurs' first home game of the season sees Everton make the trip to the capital on August 25th.

The Toffees have endured a few difficult years and can't seem to avoid battling for their Premier League status in the final weeks of the season.

Spurs are unbeaten in their last seven Premier League games against Everton, who have to go back to September 2020 for their last win over the Lilywhites.

Looking at the results last term between these two teams, Spurs ran out 2-1 winners when they met in north London, with Richarlison and Son Heung-min both getting on the scoresheet.

Postecoglou might well have revenge on his mind from their last encounter when they next meet Everton, after he left Goodison Park frustrated his side could not see out the win.

A brace from Richarlison looked like it would be enough to earn another 2-1 victory but Jarrad Branthwaite's 90th-minute equaliser saw the spoils shared on Merseyside.

Tough Toon trip follows

Technically just sneaking into the start of September but we shall include Tottenham's trip to Newcastle United to complete this early run of games.

Spurs and the Magpies were in the battle for the top four last season but both fell away in the final weeks to miss out on Champions League football.

St James' Park has not been a happy hunting ground for Spurs in the last couple of years, losing 6-1 and 4-0 on their last two visits to Newcastle.

Postecoglou will be determined to set the record straight but this is by far the hardest of the three fixtures Tottenham have at the start of another highly-anticipated Premier League season.
