Only five runners lined up but the winner Thinkin' Big completely outstayed them with a bold, front-running display for win three (maiden stakes) from four career starts. He shot to the front after 200m, was taken on briefly but rider Tim Clark took advantage of the fence and they raced a length clear again at the 1000m. Clark held him together nearing the last corner, sat quietly to the 300m then gave him a shake. He bounded clear inside the 200m and in a good staying effort gave them little chance, out by two and half lengths at the post, laying claims for the upcoming Australian ATC Derby (Gr 1, 2400m). Favourite Tarka lay third turning in, pulled out three wide to make his run but never looked like catching the winner. Irukandji was second mostly, challenged well to the 200m but came to the end of it and could only battle over the last part for third. Panzerfaust ran on late for fourth when it was all over.
