The story behind this year’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner

Storm Boy continued the amazing run by Justify and logged a feature win for a family that includes one of New Zealand's great mares of this century when he won Saturday's $3 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic on the Gold Coast.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained colt provided the Coolmore stallion with his richest win in Australia when he scored a dominant 2-1/2-length win in the 1200-metre event.

Storm Boy is a member of the second Australian crop of Justify, the US Triple Crown winner who stood in Australia in 2019, 2020 and 2021, didn't return in 2022, but was back last year to stand at Coolmore at $77,000 a serve.

Storm Boy was already a Stakes winner, thanks to his Group 3 B J McLachlan Stakes (1200m) success, joining Group 2 Reisling Stakes winner Group 3 SA Sires' Produce Stakes winner Learning To Fly, Air Assault and Listed Anzac Day Stakes winner Legacies as his top Australian performers.

Storm Boy is out of the Fastnet Rock mare Pelican, a dual city winner who is out of a former Kiwi champion in Seachange.

A daughter of Cape Cross, Seachange was twice a winner of the NZ Horse of the Year and won seven Group 1 races.

Storm Boy is the first foal from Pelican, who had a Pierro colt in 2022 and last year gave birth to a St Mark's Basilica filly.
