Captain Cook Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Wyndspelle (Iffraaj) has been retired from racing after suffering an injury.

The entire was being prepared for a tilt at the Haunui Farm Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) later this month by the training partnership of Johno Benner and Hollie Wynyard.

"He strained a suspensory ligament," Benner said. "He gives everything when he races and with rehab it would take three to four months to go again. He has done enough now and he owes us nothing and has been a very good, sound racehorse.

"Otaki would have been a nice target to finish on, he was probably only going to have that race anyway, but it is what it is.

"He has got a great CV, seven times Group One placed at all age groups and distances, and winning the Group One. He is a special horse.

"Hopefully that Group One win will secure him a job at stud somewhere, that's always been the goal. He has a good pedigree and a beautiful look and has been a sound racehorse."

Wyndspelle retires the winner of four of his 40 starts and was placed on a further 17 occasions for earnings of $659,146.

A NZ$75,000 New Zealand Bloodstock Select Yearling Sale purchase by Phill Cataldo, Wyndsopelle is out of the winning High Chaparral (Sadler's Wells) mare Western Star who is herself a half-sister to the Group 3 winner Lady Alberton (Golan) and Listed winner Alberton Park (Thorn Park). His third dam is Alberton Lass (Adios), dam of seven winners including Group 2 winner Sir Alberton (Red Tempo). while this is also the family of Doncaster Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Brutal (O'Reilly).
