A filly by Coolmore Australia's Pierro (Lonhro) was the top lot to sell during the first session of the Inglis Australian Weanling Sale on Wednesday when bought for $400,000 by Trilogy Racing.

Sold by Fairhill Farm late in the day as Lot 273, the filly is out of the five-time winner Now Now (Danehill Dancer) making her a half-sister to multiple Group winner Fiesta (I Am Invincible).

"This is our highest selling weanling. We were shocked with that price, to be honest. It was quite extraordinary,'' said Fairhill Farm's Mike O'Donnell.

"I didn't think she'd land there. No way.''

Purchase Sean Dingwall of Trilogy Racing did not expect to pay $400,000 to secure the filly but believes she is the best he's seen by Pierro.

"We had to go a bit further than we hoped but at the end of the day she was the one we wanted,'' Dingwall, who was yet to decide whether the filly would be retained to race or re-offered as a yearling next year," he said.

"For us, being the number one draft pick, we were happy to pay for her.

"She's the dearest weanling I've bought but I loved her. From a Pierro perspective, I think she's the best Pierro I've seen, she had more strength than a lot of what I see from a Pierro perspective and that gave me a lot of confidence.

"We love the stallion but it is always hard to find the horse that you like by him. She's already a half sister to a Group 2 winner (Fiesta) and she's a mare who has only just gone to stud, so there's upside in the pedigree.''
