Colts lead the way on day one with son of Night Of Thunder (Dubai) selling for £230,000
The top lot sold during day one of the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale on Tuesday was a son of Darley's Night Of Thunder (Dubawi) who was bought by Avenue Bloodstock for £230,000, with colts accounting for the top four lots on a day when three lots made £200,000 or more.
Sold by Irish-based Mountarmstrong Stud as Lot 170, the session topping colt is out of the winning Acclamation (Royal Applause) mare Pious Alexander who is herself a half-sister to Group winning juvenile filly Anthem Alexander (Starspangledbanner) and fellow Group winner and sire Dandy Man (Mozart).
"It was probably more than I'd hoped to pay for him, but like every sale you attend, you have to stretch for the good ones," said Mark McStay of Avenue Bloodstock after purchasing Lot 170.
"My client had given me a figure and when that figure was passed I got him on the phone and he said keep going. We were probably on our last bid, but he's a very, very nice horse by an exceptionally good sire, from an excellent nursery and by a good sire. We are delighted to get him, but we had to stretch a bit.
"I saw a lot of Dubawi in the horse and I was delighted to get him," McStay added.
Night Of Thunder stood at Darley's Kildangan Stud for a fee of €75,000 again this year having stood for €25,000 in 2020 when his current crop of yearlings was conceived.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club bought the day's second most expensive lot, a son of Acclamation for £200,000. Offered as Lot 57 by Trinity Park Stud, the colt is the second foal out of Italian Listed winner Isole Canarie (Rip Van Winkle). The colt was the only lot the operation purchased on Tuesday.

Overall on the first day 199 of the 218 lots offered sold for £8,954,500, up 28 per cent compared to the opening session in 2021. The number sold this year was up 12 per cent compared to 2021 when 178 of the 204 lots offered sold for £7,007,500. The average was up 14 per cent from £39,368 to £44,997 while the median finished at £38,000, up 19 per cent from a year ago.
Peter and Ross Doyle Bloodstock, leading buyers at last year's sale, spent the most on the opening day having bought nine yearlings for £642,000.
Tally Ho Stud, who were the leading vendor by aggregate in 2021, meanwhile was the day's leading vendor by aggregate, selling 11 lots for £607,000.
The second and final session of the sale will be held on Wednesday.
