Australian-breds will play a significant role at this week’s Cape Thoroughbred Yearling Sale in South Africa.

The two-day 256 strong-yearling sale commences on Thursday before the running of the CTS Million Dollar, Africa’s richest horse race on Saturday at Kenilworth.

Australian-breds Sensible Lover, Lonhromance and champion 2YO filly Entisaar will contest Saturday’s G1 Majorca Stakes with G1 performer Brazuca in the G1 Cape Derby.

There are 11 Australian-bred yearlings in the Cape sale and many that trace back through their female line to well-known Australian black type families.

Lot 21 on account of Highland Stud is a filly by Shamardal’s multiple G1 winner Lope De Vega out of Manhattan Transfer, a Carnegie half-sister to General Nediym.

Purchased at the Magic Millions Weanling Sale from the draft of Queensland’s Clearwater Farm, this filly traces back to Melbourne Cup winner Brew.

Bought as a weanling by South African trainer Paul Lafferty, Lot 41 is a bay filly by Big Brown out of the winning Elusive Quality mare Nufoos, whose dam was a G1 winner in South Africa before heading to stud in Australia.

With this filly being the third yearling from the mare to head to South Africa, her best runner to date is the G2 performed Hard Spun filly Estidraaj.

Another by Big Brown is Lot 110, a colt out of the Thirty Six Red mare They Say.

Purchased in Australia as a weanling for $46,000 by Klawervlei Stud, the well-bred colt is a half-brother to champion 2YO filly Hasna, a dual G1 winner for George Altomonte’s Corumbene Stud.

Lot 163 is an Australian-bred son of Wanted, with Lot 166 being an Australian-bred son of Uncle Mo. Both were purchased at the 2015 Magic Millions Weanling Sale and will sell as part of the large draft of Klawervlei Stud.

There are 11 lots from the second crop by Gimmethegreenlight, a G1-winning Australian-bred son of More Than Ready.

Purchased at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale by Hassen Adams, Gimmethegreenlight is a half-brother to G1 Coolmore Classic winner Ofcourseican, both out of Canny Lad’s daughter Yes She Can Cancan.

A yearling by the stallion that is sure to create plenty of interest is Lot 126 from the draft of Hemel ‘N Aarde Stud.

The colt is out of the Australian-bred Galileo mare Walkingonthemoon, a half-sister to Sun Classique, who was foaled in Australia before doing the majority of her racing in South Africa where she was crowned Champion 3YO Filly after three G1 victories. She went on race in Dubai where she was successful at G1 level in the Sheema Classic.

An Australian-bred stallion who is sure to create plenty of interest at the sale is Delago Deluxe.

The son of Encosta de Lago was sold as a yearling in Australia at the Magic Millions Gold Coast sale before being sent to South Africa where he captured two G1 races and then headed back to Australia to commence his stud career at Newhaven Park.

Delago Delux’s first yearlings, offered at the recent Magic Millions Yearling Sale, averaged $169,000 off a service fee of just $11,000.

With two yearlings catalogued by him in this sale, the first to go through the ring is Lot 158, a colt out of the well-related Scenic mare Beam, herself a half-sister to G1 winner Bollinger from the family of stakes winners Romneya, Always Alison, Benicio and Mannington.

The second of Delaxo Deluxe’s progeny to go through the ring is Lot 164 and both will be offered by Klawervlei Stud.

Out of the Dehere mare Bounding Along, a half-sister to the G 2 winner and G1 placed Conservatorium, this filly was purchased from the weanling draft of Newhaven Park by respected judge Kerry Jack.

In 2014/15 Australian-bred runners in South Africa recorded 18% of the Group victories and 23% of the G1 wins from only 3% of the runners.
