* MONTJEU's NZ-bred son Tavistock sired his first Australian winner at Canterbury on August 6.

Diamond Valores won on debut putting up a strong finish to land the honours for the Peter and Paul Snowden stable.

From the unraced Zabeel mare Special Diamond, a sister to Australian Derby winner Don Eduardo, Diamond Valores was purchased by John O’Shea for $130,000 from Cambridge Stud’s 2011 NZB Premier Sale at Karaka.

Tavistock’s first crop have just turned three.

His first crop of juveniles produced three winners including the Listed Great Northern Foal Stakes winner Avisto who won the Listed Great Northern Foal Stakes.

* THE first foal by Thorn Park’s Cox Plate winner Ocean Park arrived at Trelawney Stud on August 6.

It was a fitting birth as Ocean Park was bred by Trelawney Stud.

The youngster is out of the dual G2-winning mare Ruud Van Slaats (Van Nistlerooy), who was also bred by the Cambridge farm.

Ocean Park, a former NZ Horse of the Year, was retired to Waikato Stud after a stellar career that netted him five G1 wins.

* A major North American sale has a link to Highview Stud’s new stallion Sweet Orange.

A filly by Sweet Orange’s sire War Front sold for $US1,250,000 during the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Yearling Sale to top trainer Wayne Lukas.

She is a half-sister to this season’s promising stakes-placed two year-old filly Take Charge Brandi.

Sweet Orange, winner of the G1 Hong Kong Classic Mile, is the only son of War Front at stud in New Zealand.

Sweet Orange represents the Danzig sire line, the most successful line in Australasia in the last 20 years.

* A trio of Haunui Farm’s recently retired mares will be served in Australia this year.

Floria, Savabeel’s winner of the G2 Brisbane Cup at her last start, will visit champion sire Redoute’s Choice while G3 Adrian Knox winner and G1 performer Full Of Spirit (Flying Spur) will be served by Sebring.

The dual stakes winner Misstrum (Stratum) will be covered by first season sire Zoustar.

Long-time Haunui client Marie Leicester has confirmed her Waikato and Counties Cup winner Annie Higgins will go to Savabeel for her first mating.

“All four of these mares have done the job where it counts on the race track and to have four elite mares retiring to stud this season will certainly see them all as welcome additions to the broodmare band,” studmaster Mark Chitty said.

“I’m sure their progeny will all be highly sought after in the years ahead.”
