Zennista Repeats At Ellerslie

3 minute read

Zenno Rob Roy’s top performing mare Zennista gained a sixth black-type victory when she won her second consecutive G3 Sofitel Stakes at Ellerslie.

Zennista was the winner of the G3 feature on Melbourne Cup Day last year for trainer Lisa Latta and rider Mark du Plessis and the combination replicated the result this year.

Zennista was racing in the colours of Wellfield Lodge, who recently purchased the mare. She is believed to be in foal to Wellfield stallion Alamosa.

“She has done very well for the stable and she will only have a couple more runs,” commented Latta. “

It was great to get another stakes win for Wellfield and if we can pick our races she could carry on.”

“She might go to Tauranga for the race she won two years ago. She was a little unlucky in it last year and that was after winning at Auckland.”

Zennista has won nine times including three G3 successes and three Listed wins in New Zealand and Australia.

She has also been G1 placed in the New Zealand Oaks and has earned $636,549.

Zennista is out of Zarnitsa (Maroof), a half-sister to Listed winner Chartreuse (St Petersburg) who is the dam of recent stakes winner Platinum Witness (California Dane).

Latta purchased Zennista for only $20,000 at the 2009 Karaka Festival Sale from Oxford Thoroughbreds.

This field had no depth for a G3 at WFA and no surprise the only realistic runners under this scale filled the top four positions. They were all mares too it should be again noted as New Zealand racing is geared all towards males gallopers for the breeders, studs and horse sales folk and has been for a long time. The track was as usual awful at Ellerslie and it does not take very much rain at all for it to become a gelatinous disgrace nor for the racing to become a raffle. The winning time of this was 2:06.83 is poor and the victor was a noted wet tracker in Zennista that had not won a race since this very event a year ago. She did apart from several more starts at home contest five races in Queensland for one paltry third in the Caloundra Cup beaten almost seven lengths so the formlines are not strong at all. She was ridden a tactical race today with the bias helping and looked certain to be beaten at the 200m but dug deep to come back and win by a nostril flare. The runner up Abidewithme if ridden half decently could have won each start this season but bad tactics and track bias plus rider error has conspired too see her finish fourth (at G1) and fifth (at G1) and third today at G3. Maybe a riding change is required as watching her supposed main rival in Soriano too much in the running and then ending up towing it into the race near the home turn was and always is a massive mistake. She strode up too win at the 200m then found herself in a ding donger before being belled a lip by the winner. Soriano was as false a favourite as you would find all day at Ellerslie as she has never won a race clockwise and today the 5yo mare having her thirty-sixth start. A poor rider by her usual jockey saw the mare kept in on the inside by first the rider of the fourth finisher and then rider of the runner up. The mare then got out and was towed into the race by the runner up at the 400m but could not ping the run home and one-batted into third. She had every chance in reality but was simply not good enough. The fourth finisher Postmans Daughter is tough and keeps coming no matter how she is ridden. The 7yo mare was having her sixty-fifth start today. The depth of this field as mentioned earlier was appalling and shown by the 8yo gelding Sing Of The Sun, a winner of just three starts, being able to plug on for fifth beaten just under nine lengths at WFA. It was his first ever attempt at WFA and came after being demolished in his two runs prior in Ratings 65 (the lowest class bar maidens). Just paste this away as a faux G3 result and a tricky wet track making it basically irrelevant unless similar conditions can be found again somewhere.
