Savabeel Filly Takes Series Lead

3 minute read

Talented Savabeel filly Saavoya completed successive stakes wins in the G2 New Zealand Bloodstock Royal Stakes at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day to take the lead in the NZB Filly of the Year series.

Trainers Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman backed up the Saavoya after she won the fourth leg in the NZB Filly of the Year Series, the G2 Eight Carat Classic, on Boxing Day.

Craig Grylls continued his association with Saavoya, who made ground with ease before dashing to the front along with favourite Vavasour (Redoute’s Choice) making her bid on the outside.

The pair stormed six lengths ahead of the field with Saavoya holding on to win by half a length.

Charmont (High Chaparral) ran a strong race to claim third place to complete a Karaka graduates trifecta.

“Saavoya will probably follow the Filly of the Year Series and will race in the next Waikato race in the Series and hopefully towards the Oaks,” Baker said.

Bred by Pukhraj Breeding and Racing and offered by Trelawney Stud at the 2013 Karaka select Sale, Saavoya was purchased by Rogerson Bloodstock for $NZ22,000.

She has had eight starts for three wins from her last four starts, increasing her winnings to $130,525 for owners Waimarama Partnership Syndicate.

Saavoya is out of the winning mare Royal Prize (Prized), a half-sister to Dancing Away (Danzatore), who was second in the G1 Karrakatta Plate.

With 16 points she leads the NZB Filly of the Year series from Platinum Witness (California Dane) with 12 points and Darci’s Dream (Darci Brahma) third with 7 points.

The next race in the NZB Filly of the Year Series is the G3 Desert Gold Stakes at Trentham on 24 January.

This G2 3yo filly feature had all sorts of drama and carnage plus was run at a strong clip and the waywardness the run home of some was alarming. The underrated Saavoya won again and has clearly bloomed this summer but her rider Craig Grylls rightly copped a hefty suspension and fine after ironically knocking down a stablemate that in turn brought down another stablemate. The form this spring and summer by the Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman stable has been dominant and in particular with age group races. They had four in the race and ended up with a first, third, a brought down and a fell. Saavoya had sat back in a solidly run race so was always going to unleash strongly and did but the filly veered in for her rider and pole-axed the stablemate De Kensington Oval at the 300m causing it to fall. The following stablemate Ezra, who it should be noted was battling after racing handy, was brought down as a result. It looked terrible and especially so in a G2 race with valuable fillies so Grylls runs the risk of a greater suspension and fine surely if having the audacity to appeal. Vavasour ran second and is a nice languid filly that will win bigger races this season and maybe in Australia too. She was ridden quiet then pounced turning for home to lead only to get buried the closing stages. The actual best effort in the race from an analytical point of view was Charmont as she was slaughtered wide on the pace early in the race by rider Opie Bosson before getting second the outer one-off. She was the lone filly there at the finish from in or near the speed and even though six and a half lengths from the winner the effort was tremendous. She even got run off badly wider by the leader turning for home and it ended up beaten over thirteen lengths. Bohemian Lily ran on okay closer in after not spending a penny in the race while Consensus was okay for fifth after being asked a lot of wide and working up handy. Outspoken the visitor ran on as did the tardy early Thee Auld Floozie and both of these will win again once at least this season. Attention Seeker went too fast in front for rider Jonathan Parkes and was poorly rated considering he is a senior jockey plus the filly hung badly the run home and caused more strife. Orange Peel cannot stay on this display but the rest had excuses caused by carnage of Saavoya and rider Craig Grylls. Oaks and blacktype filly races are well within range of the top three home and no surprise if one or all of them chase the bigger stakemoney and prestige at the Sydney autumn carnival and/or target the easier South Australia and Queensland filly features. There were some handy types on display and some down the track can be forgiven. All in all an eventful race but still in the main a serious future form reference.
