NZ Success For Paco Boy

3 minute read

Former UK star Paco Boy was represented by his first New Zealand winner on Saturday when 2YO filly Stella Di Paco won the Listed Castletown Stakes at Wanganui.

The filly is also the first winner for the new Te Akau training partnership of Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards.

Paco Boy, a hugely popular triple G1 winner in the UK and Europe during his racing career, shuttled to Waikato Stud for one season in 2011.

The son of Desert Style now boasts five stakes winners worldwide including the UK G2 winner Beacon and G3 winner Smaih.

Stella Di Paco is bred and raced by leading Sydney owner Max Whitby, who has had a long association with Waikato Stud as a part-owner of Savabeel.

Stella Di Paco is out of the winning Savabeel mare Savabeel Star, a half-sister to Hawke’s Bay Guineas winner Stardane, and is the first black type win as a broodmare sire for the WS Cox Plate winner who is leading the NZ sires’ premiership.

* PACO Boy had his sixth stakes winner in the UK on Saturday when Peacock, a colt from the Rainbow Quest mare Rainbow’s Edge, won the Listed Fairway Stakes at Newmarket.

Paco Boy stands at Highclere Stud in the UK.

• DARCI Brahma gelding Julinsky Prince won the Listed Challenge Stakes at Wanganui on Saturday to provide a most pleasing result for his trainer Fraser Auret and owner-breeder John Bromley.

The Auret-trained Thorn Prince was edged out of second place by a short head, denying the trainer and Bromley a stakes quinella

Julinsky Prince is a son of the stakes-winner and G1-placed mare Julinsky Princess and has now won four black type races with 13 of his last 14 starts in Group and Listed company.

They include a G2 win in the Japan NZ International Trophy at Tauranga in March, a third in the G1 Haunui Farm WFA Classic and fourth in the G1 Captain Cook Stakes.

This was a total form reversal by the juvenile filly Stella Di Paco after being beaten by big margins in her first two starts. The filly had been beaten almost twenty-one lengths and then eleven lengths so no surprise she was the rank outside in this Listed event and paid $45. She led and got away with some cheap sectionals then kicked on best the inside to win in 1:14.01 for the 1200m. The inside and on pace bias was rampant at Wanganui all day and going wide for better footing was pointless and detrimental to the chances of any runner. Stella Di Paco was a first stakes win in New Zealand for her sire Paco Boy and a first blacktype for the newly formed training pair of Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards. The runner was also a filly in Miss Fi that race close throughout while the third finisher to emphasis the race bias was Massa Lu that sat second the outer throughout. The best run was the fourth finisher Mr Conductor that would have won but for a nasty check early and settling down a clear last. He ran home hard down the outer and it was totally against the track bias all day and this result in particular so was even more meritorious. Speedy Achiever was strongly supported late and found the line from the back in the manner of a gelding that should strengthen further as a 3yo. The big flop was the hot favourite Hover that jumped inwards badly at the start and cost Mr Conductor the race. Hover was never ever travelling at any stage and was weak the run home. Two visiting fillies in Frazzle and Benoit were beaten out of sight with the former stopping after a wide run, so possibly forgiveable, but the latter was detached by a big amount across the top and never hit out. Hard to trust the result as the track bias today was blatant and this was the slowest run 1200m on the entire day.
