Beneteau Sorely Missed By Arrowfield

3 minute read

Results don’t come much better than the success enjoyed by past and present Arrowfield Stud sires in Sydney and Melbourne on Saturday.

Resident stallions Not A Single Doubt, Snitzel and the late Beneteau – all sons of Arrowfield champion Redoute’s Choice - each added a Group 3 victory to their outstanding stud records.

Progeny by Beneteau, who died prematurely just as his stud career was about to take off, won two stakes races taking the trio's tally of black type successes for the day to four.

Beneteau's death in 2013 was a major loss for the Australian breeding industry. His two crops have already produced a pair of Group winners, two Listed winners and six other stakes performers.

Beneteau was the star on Saturday as he also sired a winner at Newcastle, home of his exciting Randwick two-year-old winner Twist Tops.

Trained at Broadmeadow by Kris Lees, Twist Tops (Beneteau x Imtops by High Rolling) claimed a lucrative maiden win at her fourth start in the $250,000 Inglis 2YO Classic to become the fourth stakes winner by her sire.

Bred by Bob Hannon, breeder of Snitzel's dual G1-winning son Shamus Award, Twist Tops was passed in for $55,000 on a $70,000 reserve when offered for sale as a yearling. A group of stable clients combined to buy the filly privately and has now won $178,000 prizemoney.

Twist Tops is a daughter of the six-time winner Imtops, a half sister to four other winners including the dam of the G1 winner Irish Darling (Ivory’s Irish). Irish Darling is the dam of the Listed winner and young sire Fighting Sun (Northern Meteor).

Another Beneteau 2YO filly Hussterical won at Newcastle earlier in the day, placing the sire beside Snitzel and Not A Single Doubt in the top five on the Australian 2YO Sires' list.

The day ended for Beneteau with a new Group winner when his 3YO gelding Puritan (Beneteau x Mina by Dracula) won the G3 Manfred Stakes at Caulfield.

Bred by Simon Cox, Puritan was sold initially for $46,000 as a yearling then purchased by his trainer and part-owner Jason Warren for $80,000 at the 2014 NZ Bloodstock Ready to Run Sale of 2YOs.

He's now won two of his four starts and almost $112,000.

Puritan scored a surprise first-up win. He settled in third last place in the 12-horse field before improving nicely (wide with cover) from the 600m. He fanned deep (under riding) at the home turn, challenged strongly on passing the 200m and kept finishing well score narrowly but in good style. Favourite Golden Spin was quickly away from barrier nine and went to the front, then steadied the early pace (first 600m 35.84) before taking a clear break after turning for home. He then looked the winner but was overtaken in the closing stages to finish a close second. Ready For Victory had a nice trip in fifth place, between runners. He was under pressure at the home turn, got to fourth at the 100m and lifted late to finish third. Vostok, winner of his first three starts, raced in fourth place on the rails, continued along the inner to be third at the 200m and then held on for (1.9 lengths) fourth after seeming to have every chance. Team Hawkes-trained Top Me Up was very slow to move and remained in last place in the 12-horse field to the 600m. He improved between runners nearing the home turn, switched deep at the 300m and ran on well for (2 lengths) fifth while smart colt Palentino was near last to the home turn and ran on nicely in restricted room for (2.9 lengths) seventh at his first run this preparation.
