The Money Trail – Canterbury, Wednesday July 6

3 minute read

Racing and Sports finds the best-backed runners in early betting on Wednesday’s meeting at Canterbury.

Track: Heavy 8

Rail: +9m Entire Circuit

First race: 1.15pm

Seventhchic (Race 1) is being given a good each way chance at $5 after halving her opening quote. A market drifter on debut when she started at double figures but ran on well to miss narrowly at Gosford, she is open to natural improvement and produced one of the highest last-start ratings in the field.

Mediterranean (Race 2) is a heavily supported odds on favourite at $1.50 after opening just into red figures this morning. He is expected to make a winning return after racing in the Golden Slipper lead-ups in the autumn, finishing fifth at his only two starts in the Skyline Stakes and Pago Pago Stakes, both at Group 2 level, and won two trials in the lead-up to his return, the latest by 5.5 lengths.

Dee Nine Elle (Race 3) opened at each way odds but good support has trimmed her price up and seen her take over as favourite at $3.20. She was well down the track at her last ruin at Ipswich but had been runner up at Randwick before that and was second at her only previous try on heavy going.

Dark Eyes (Race 7) will be seeking redemption for a luckless last start effort when badly blocked for a run at Randwick. His resuming run before that was a promising third at the same track and punters are looking for better fortune today, backing him in more than a point as a $2.90 favourite.

Tony Gollan-trained filly Dee Nine Elle scored a very smart win here. She began well from barrier six, and then travelled particularly well in the lead. She picked up the tempo from the 600m, raced well clear shortly afterwards and was never threatened from that stage to win impressively by a big margin. She is a filly to watch. Gone To Paris was midfield before making a mid-race move to be second at the 700m. She then battled on nicely hold second in a sound effort despite being outclassed by the winner.
