Sailor Shoots For Hat-trick

3 minute read

Lightly-raced galloper Sailor's Farewell may prove the value runner in today's Pane In The Glass Handicap (race 5) at Gosford.

The Benchmark 65 over a mile is low on numbers and will have the topweight Deemed a short priced favourite to win on his recent form, in particular his last run in town.

But the in-form Sailor's Farewell has no weight and with 7kg away from the topweight should give him a run for his money.

Sailor's Farewell, prepared by Con Karakatsanis, made his debut with a fats finishing third over 1200m at Bathurst then went for another break.

Resuming over 1000m at Hawkesbury he found the trip too short and battled away well to finish fourth.

Next start was over a more suitable 1400m at Grafton where he had a big weight and wide gate.

Settling just worse than midfield he found traffic in the run but once clear hit the line well and finished a 1.2 length third.

He put the writing on the wall, though, and it was no surprise to see him go even better next time over a mile.

Also at Grafton, he settled off the speed but much closer in the run, despite carrying a big weight again and drawing barrier 13.

Turning sixth he found the line well, scoring a half length win and a deserved maiden success.

Last start, back to 1400m in a Class 1 at Mowra, he had the 3kg claim for apprentice rider Yusuke Ichikawa.

Settling midfield but deep, he proved too good in the run to the line to go on for a three length win, clearing out over the final stages.

Today he meets a tougher class but with Ichiwaka aboard again he'll carry just 51kg after the claim.

The trip suits, he relished the soft ground last time and he'll be able to sit fairly close to the favourite in the run.

He should give his backers a good sight again and can bring up a hat-trick of wins.

The topweight Deemed is very honest and a repeat of his run in town last time would see him go very close here.

Prepared by Kris Lees at Newcastle, Deemed resumed here over 1200m with a fast finishing second, beaten only a head after drawing wide.

He then stepped up to 1300m on the Kensington track at Randwick where he drew an inside gate and drifted well back but came with a big finish, running on into third behind Bereft.

Up to 1500m at Hawkesbury, he sat third in the heavy ground and worked home strongly, scoring a half length win over Barriers.

Last start, over 1580m at Canterbury, he drew the inside and settled fourth before again working to the line well, finishing runner-up, albeit 4.3 lengths from easy winner Silent Reward.

This is a much easier assignment and he is suited by the soft ground and distance.

He also goes well at the course with a win and a second from two tries, the win being at this trip.

But he does have to carry topweight and give the likes of Sailor's Farewell a fair bit of weight.

He'll be short but should go close.

Sandrio was disappointing last time on heavy ground, just struggling to get through the conditions to finish over 10 lengths from the winner.

He had won his previous run, over a mile on good ground, and his best form seems to be on firmer footing.

He looms well placed here and rates highly but the concern is the track condition.

There are plenty of chances here who can slip into the minors.

Rebel Prince is jumping in distance but is a winner at the trip and is trained on the track, while Amphibious ran well last time and with a light weight and a good draw shouldn't be far away.
