Powell The Key

3 minute read

The Kranji Stakes B field assembled for today’s final Singapore meeting of the season is a cracker with several smart poly types engaged.

Sifting through the main chances on Timeform adjusted weight ratings reveal a narrow edge to the Shane Baertschiger-trained Bahen, a galloper with plenty of experience on the poly.

Bahen has won five of his 16 starts since coming to Singapore, four of those coming on the poly from ten appearances.

Bahen has raced four times since a spell and has been in good form winning second run back on the turf in Kranji Stakes C company.

Last time out he caught the eye with a closing third over 1200m on the turf in class 3 company behind Peaceful Warrior but the dual switch of back to the poly combined with John Powell going back into the saddle all point to another top showing.

Powell has won all five races atop Bahen in Singapore and he clearly gets on very well with the gelding.

Drawn out in nine is likely to suit Bahen who can sit off the likely fast speed up front and finish off late.

Talented mare Savannah Dancer who returned to winning form last time out after a sequence of below par runs looks to be the main danger.

In the Michael Freedman stable, Savannah Dancer normally holds her form once she regains it and there was a lot to like about her strong win in class 3 company on the turf last start, sitting handy throughout before reaching the lead 300m from home and holding out One Par.

Already a winner on the poly, Savannah Dancer has scope for further improvement in her Timeform ratings and with apprentice Rizuan Shafiq taking a kilo claim, she comes right into calculations again.

A galloper with claims at odds down in the weights after the claim for Joseph Tee is Terminator.

Now trained by Choon Bok Chua, Terminator has been given an ease up since an unlucky unplaced effort behind Golden Sand Steed in Kranji Stakes C company on the poly 44 days ago.

But See was atop the gelding in a recent impressive barrier trial effort in which he ran third indicating fitness wise he is not far off top form.

Two starts back Terminator was just beaten by Supernova in a Kranji Stakes B company on the poly and a repeat of that effort would see him right in the finish today.

Top weight is the consistent Golden Stand Steed who has won two of his last three starts both on the poly.

After two wins last time out he had little luck when ridden by Lai Quan Kek over 1000m on the poly in benchmark 83 company.

On that occasion he settled further back than normal at the rear of the field with plenty to do, but was storming home late beaten just under three lengths.

The step up to 1200m should not worry him and the switch to apprentice See will take 3kgs off his back.

If he holds his recent form Golden Sand Steed should be right in the frame at the finish.

The speedy Flash Gift is another racing in top form who must enter calculations.

The winner of four of his eight starts, Flash Gift was a convincing winner last start in Kranji Stakes C company over 1200m on turf. Wearing pacifiers for the first time, he tracked the speed before peeling out in the straight to take the front 300m from home.

Equally at home on turf or the poly, Flash Gift has drawn five and will get the run of the race from there with Saifudin Ismail taking over riding duties from Manoel Nunes who is on suspension.

Enjoy the contest.
