Owners including apprentice in Group One challenge

3 minute read

The connections of the top southern mare Include are staying loyal to their regular rider Courtney Barnes.

They have given a resounding vote of confidence in the apprentice by handing her the Group One ride on the star four-year-old in the Gr.1 Fiber Fresh New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes at Te Aroha on April 4.

“My daughter and son-in-law were looking at a North Island rider, but they will be sticking to a winning combination,” said Brian Anderton, who trains the home-bred with his son Shane.

The daughter of Gallant Guru is raced by her breeders Karen and Wayne Stewart, stud managers of the Anderton family’s White Robe Lodge where the mare’s sire stands.

Include rounded off her preparation for the northern venture with an impressive victory at the expense of Madam Victoria in Saturday’s Listed Valachi Downs South Island Breeders’ Stakes.

She was ridden by Barnes, who has now been aboard Include in all 10 of her career wins, with the last five in succession.

“They certainly know where that winning post is,” Anderton said. “We’re going to take it a race at a time so we don’t get to the bottom of her.

“We are waiting for a programme of fillies and mares’ races in Brisbane, nothing is certain but we will be looking at what’s about for her.”

Include will be making her second North Island appearance at Te Aroha after a rare failure in last season’s Gr.1 New Zealand Oaks at Trentham. She raced fiercely in front and faded out to run seventh.

“There was a race put off at Hororata and she went into the Oaks mad fresh,” Anderton said.

“She was a month between races – had she had one it would have taken that edge off her.”

The times were off all day (aside from the chute times at 800m-1200m that are always bionic here and should never ever be used as a true guide) and the rail being out 8m never helped matters either. This Listed event over a mile for fillies and mares was a decent strength line up and certainly had the depth on paper even taking into consideration three or four of the runners were out of form. The winner Include has come back even better as a 4yo mare and is yet to taste defeat this season with five straight wins. Her record is now an imposing ten wins from fifteen starts and she keeps clearing the higher bar set each time. Up until today she had raced three times at Riccarton and placed once so it was a bogey track in essence but she dispatched that out of the ballpark with a crunching win. Include also is two-dimensional in that she can sit close then pounce or as today showed she is able to settle back and come over the top of them with a will to win that is commendable. Her stable of Brian and Shane Anderton have had some tough times of late family wise but their runners at the moment are flying. Loyalty is a big thing for South Islanders and Team Anderton have shown that by keeping on apprentice Courtney Barnes for all her ten wins so far and she will be on the mare at G1 in the North Island next at Te Aroha. Include has won on every type of footing but is definitely more tractable on decent footing and her sharp turn of foot only serves to prove this. Madam Victoria is a talented mare and after trailing to the turn she shot to the front at the 200m and was holding at the 100m. The fact that Include buried her to win by half a length is more kudos to that mare as it takes some ability to get over her that late in a race. Sucre ran on strongly late for third down the outer after being ridden cold. The Solitaire was an honest fourth and she is too gifted to ever leave out in these sorts of races. Miss Three Stars fought well and has been racing well this season. Sureasyouwereborn ran okay for a stamina-orientated mare and while she found a flat spot the run home but got her second wind late. The stablemates Lockett and My Chino disappointed while the leader Our Premonition stopped badly the run home. This was a sound depth field of fillies and mares and the first six home will be winning more than once this season if kept in work. The first two home are 4yo mares so have another lucrative season ahead at least.
