Promising filly Stacey Ann can earn herself a crack at a black type event with a bold showing at Te Awamutu on Wednesday.

She has placed at both her starts to date and will have the home track advantage when she steps out in the Fairview Motors 1150m.

“If she won or went very well then I’ll probably run her in the Great Northern Foal Stakes at Ellerslie, otherwise she’ll go for a break,” trainer Darrell Hollinshead said.

Stacey Ann was fourth on debut at Awapuni before Christmas and then returned at Te Rapa last month to finish third.

“She was probably a bit fat there, but I’m very happy with her now and she galloped well on Saturday morning,” Hollinshead said.

The likely heavy nature of the track was an issue, but he is happy to give the two-year-old her chance.

“It’s the first race and if it was later in the day we wouldn’t be starting,” Hollinshead said.

“She’s a typical Mastercraftsman, a big filly with a lot of maturing to do yet.”

Stacey Ann was bred by Hollinshead and is the result of a fortuitous day at the sales, securing the mother Vinskible late in the piece.

“I set a limit of $25,000 and the first one I looked at went for $90,000 and then missed another mare when I bid up to $48,000,” he said. “I was just about to spit the dummy when I got her with one bid of $14,000.”

Stacey Ann is owned by the Hollinshead family and raced in partnership with a syndicate that includes Waipa Racing Club committee member Marc Webb.
